Sat. 9/19/92-Reno NCAR: Race team owner~Bob Pond's Rutan-designed custom Unlimited Class racer~#21-"Pond Racer" (N221BP) gets a power run-up of its' twin Nissan-Electromotive powerplants out on the Stead Field.:

It's with a heavy heart I am forced to announce the end of Precious Metal's air racing career. She sustained heavy damage in a ground fire at a fuel stop this afternoon Sept. 08 2015.:

Long Gone Legends of Air Racing:

Bob Abrams #21. N5151. He had Trans Florida Aviation build this up for racing. The wings were clipped and (interestingly) the wing to fuselage fillet was removed and replaced with a 90 degree angle one. A couple weeks after his photo was taken, while Bob was racing at the Las Vegas races at Boulder airport he blew an engine and while he was setting up for a mayday landing had an approach turn stall and crashed fatally. Rare photo as not a lot of pictures were taken of this plane.:

Keith Breazeal captured this incredible moment at Reno Air Races after storm ripped through.Photographers had shoot at Reno Races Sat 4 Sept 2013.Timed for sunset,but weather bad.Dashed to flight line as crews moved P-51s in.Lightning in area & could see rain.Sky darkened.Lightning got closer.Shutters madly clicked.Lightning now about mile away.Then rain.A photographer yelled “if anybody gets a shot with lightning, I’m buying the beer!” All ran for cover.Showed photo & asked “does this count...:

Reno Air Races "Dago Red" P-51D Mustang hit speeds in excess of 520 MPH - for a prop driven aircraft this is unheard of in level flight and especially in an air race. Very unique:

North American P-51 Mustang Modified 2014 #7 Strega (Strega = Witch):

#13 White Lightnin' P-38 Lightning. This aircraft was retired from racing after it was damaged in a crash landing. It was bought by Red Bull and now does airshows.:
