This wrecked Lockheed PV-1 Ventura, delivered to the US Navy as Bu. 34645 and later transferred to the Royal New Zealand Air Force as NZ4522, was hit in the starboard engine by a shell on September 9, 1944. The bomber, which had been part of a raid on Rabaul, limped on one engine to Talasea airstrip in New Britain. But the combination of heavy landing and short runway, which meant the aircraft couldn’t take off again, saw the Ventura stripped for spares and abandoned.:
